Windows ME - computer crash

Expert: Lorry - 1/22/2005

Question
Hi,  I have a Micron computer with windows ME and I've been great difficulty lately. The only way I can shut down my computer is manually. If I try to shut it down normally, as soon as I hit the start button I get the message; explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL. when I try to start Norton anti-virus to see if I have a virus, I get the message; Can't start the integrator. I tryed to start in repair mode and I still have the same problems. I was able to run Adaware and also Norton Utilities and both found over 200 problems each. But that only seemed to make things worse. I tryed system restore and it only made things marginally better. Last night I couldn't get online. But today after some screwing around I was able to. I was also able to run Norton and it did discover a virus, but It wouldn't let me quarantine or delete it. I ran utilities again and still recieved notice of 200 problems. Now when I press the start button to shut down I still recieve the error message: "Probs.w/Internet explorer, IE will shut down". When I click OK then I get the Desktop Recovery screen. When I click to get out of that I recieve the error message: caused an error with RUNDL32. I don't know what to try next. PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Hi Mike,

When you ran Ad-aware, did you do the following?

Check for updates before running program. Then follow the directions here to do a full scan:

The following explains how to set Ad-aware's settings to perform a "Full Scan."

In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area.

The following items should be on a green check, not on a red X.

Under the Scanning button:

Scan within archives

Under Memory & Registry, Check EVERYTHING

In Check Drives & Folders, make sure all of your hard drives are selected

Under the Advanced button, check ALL under Log detail level (this makes it easier for visitors to the Lavasoft Support Forums to see what options you have selected should you require assistance.)

Under the Tweak button...

Some of these may not be an available option, depending on your version of Ad-aware and your version of Windows.  Do not be concerned if you cannot select a certain item.

In Scanning Engine:

Unload recognized processes during scanning

Include info about ignored objects in logfile, if detected in scan

Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile

Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile

Include used command line parameters in logfile

In Cleaning Engine:

XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior to deletion

Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

UNCHECK: Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click Proceed to save these settings.  When you would like to perform a "Full Scan," switch the scan mode from SmartScan to Custom.

After Ad-aware is finished and gives you the report, the window that has the little boxes next to the threats, right click one of the boxes and choose Select All Objects - or something similar.

After running Ad-aware, you must reboot your computer. It may be necessary to run Ad-aware two or three times if you have a lot of spyware, rebooting each time in between.

Where it says,"In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area", on the top of the Ad-aware window, there are 5 symbols, click on the one that looks like a gear.

What virus did NAV find? Either send the name of the virus to me or you can do a search for it at:

http://www.symantec.com/search/

Regarding the "explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL" eror, did you go to Windows Update and download the CRITICAL UPDATE(S) that are available?

Hope this helps!
