Windows ME - multimedia card

Expert: Lorry - 3/12/2004

Question

well...  I opened it up and I can see my mother board, vodoo banshee video card;  the 10/100 ethernet card,  and another card directly below that which is the same size and is where the phone line would plug in if I used dial up service.  There's 3 smaller cards that are my memory, the cooling fan and the hard drive.  Other than that, there's no other cards!   Or am I missing something?  What is the size of a "multimedia device" (which is what the error report says is the problem)  And since I don't have sound, it would assume it is my sound card!  Or am I mssing somehting here? (besides the sound card! LOL)
Again, I'm under the impression I had a Soundblaster live card installed. So where would that puppy be and how big would it be? It's probably right under my nose but I'm not recognizing it.  Thanks. -------------------------

Hmm. Sounds pretty darn close, but not quite right(I don't hink)  I have a ? mark, not excalmation, and my computer isn't coming out of hibernation. The other thing is that I am using Mozilla as a web browser, not Windows, although I do have the latest Windows upgrades and service packs installed.
Close!  but that cigar is still floating around out there!
I think I will try to reseat the card and see if that helps.  Any other ideas would be apprecdiated. Thanks again, Phil

Hi Lori

thanks for the answer. well, I got there, but it says "no soubd devices"!
I had sound capabliltiy prior to a clean install of win2000, so what happened?  Has my sound card gone bad?  Maybe the repair guy didn't correctly reinstall the sound card when he was trying to do some other repairs?  Any clues?  Thanks!

PS   Under the folder for Problem Devices, it lists PCI/VEN_1106&DEV_3058&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_20\3&61AAA01&0&25
with an error code of 28

Hello

I know this isn't technically the correct category for this question, but there are no listed experts for audio problems, so I'm hoping you would have an idea.  when I try to plug in my speakers, all I get is a crackling sound, but no audio.  They worled prior to a recent clean install of Win2000 pro.
I right clicked the My Computer Icon on my desktop and ran the Hardware Wizard which then shows a yellow question mark next to Mutlimedia Audio Controller. I was under the impression that I had a Soundblaster Live card onboard and so I went online to download updated drivers and did so. When I go to install the new drivers I get a message that "setup could not detect any Soundblaster card on your system"  How do I go about finding what card I actually do have so I can update drivers?  Or, if you don't think it is a matter of updating drivers, what should I be doing?  Thanks,Phil

Hi Phil,

Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, it should be listed under Components, Sound Device.

Hope this helps!

Hi Phil,

Asked my brother for his advice, he came back with:

A whole bunch of variable here!  Repair guy, "clean install", etc.  I'd remove the card with the question mark and do a reboot and see if Windows can figure out what the card is.  If that doesn't work, he'll have to take the card out and see if there's any identification on it and then go for the drivers.

Hope this helps!

To find out what is on your computer, including which sound card, go to:

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, including Microsoft Hotfixes, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.

What makes it nice, is that is free.

Hope this helps!
