Windows 7/error message

QUESTION: My mother has a windows 7 desktop and recently she has been experiencing a problem. She goes to her local library site to access Morningstar reports but sometimes, when she tries to access this, she gets the following error.  Please let me know if there is anyway around it, if it is caused by her computer, the library's server or morningstar.  Sometimes she gets this error as well, when she goes to mornningstar directly and clicks on an individual.  It seems that if she get's this error at morningstar when she clicks on a link for the stock, she gets the error, but then she can type in the stock and the stock page appears.

There are many issues that could be causing this problem. First and foremost you will want to make sure your computer is completely up to date with all windows updates, not just the critical ones but all optional ones and any hardware drivers that may be available in windows update.

Next you will want to make sure your system is free and clear from the malware/spyware problems as in the error I see 'proxy' issues which can happen if your web browser internet settings has been changed via a hijacking.

I suggest visiting my website at and read the TIPS page on OPTIMIZING your computer. Then go to the SOFTWARE/SUPPORT page and install all the programs from the PINK section which will include CCLEANER and MALWAREBYTES.

I believe this should make a lot of difference. Finally, if you are (still) using the internet explorer web browser, I suggest changing to the more popular and much safer/secure and faser Chrome Web browser (

Hope this helps

QUESTION: Thank you for all that information.  I will followup on all your suggestions.  I want to know though, she uses a free anti-virus software called, AVG.  It has received good reviews but now, I am wondering if she should use something different.  Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks again.

Hello again

Yes AVG is "okay" however it is more memory intensive and in my opinion, especially with the most recent release of Avast (version 8), not as good as Avast.

Either of these however, are still better then going with McAffey or Norton which disable the built in windows firewall and replace it with its own, which is never good. Any time a program is turning off windows services in order to function for security, you know it is not a good thing.

As I have been volunteering in the 'windows' category since the inception of AllExperts, which has now moved to numerous windows categories. I will therefore be happy to answer any Windows 7,8 and 10 based question. What can't I answer? Not much, as this is the main reason I volunteered here, because I am hopeful the questions I can not answer will allow me to investigate the problem so that I can answer it. The TIPS and SOFTWARE support through my website at can also be of some help.

I have owned my own computer consulting business for the past 17 years and since the very beginning I have volunteered with AllExperts in the hopes I would be able to learn from others mistakes and problems. The goal for me is to be able to research any problem I don't initially have the answer to, in the hopes I will be able to further benefit for my own clients when they come across a similar problem.

For the past 17 years I have been providing technical services from building computers to constructing complete control rooms. Working with CTV I have helped produce the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Later, designing and construction of "instant replay control rooms' for the Big Screens found in Stadiums and Coliseums.
