Windows 7/boot-up

Hi mike,
I've had reason to instal Win7 onto another partition and delete the previous installation; Now on boot-up I get a screen asking me which Windows 7 to run and want to get rid of the reference to the old one which no longer exists... How do I reset this?

Hello David

You are going to want to go in to the windows boot menu from the msconfig.

Click on the start menu and type msconfig and then click on it from the search results

Once in msconfig click on the BOOT tab and then EDIT. Now you will want to remove the entire line that deals with the drive/partition you have removed.  Be sure and careful that you only remove that one line and nothing else. Save and restart.

If the above seems to vague or you feel it might be a little out of your league (I'm being vague on purpose here because if it doesn't make sense then you shouldn't do it and you should do what I am about to say next)

Another method by using a free software tool would be to go to the following link and follow the steps (complete with pictures)

You will need to install the software program (EasyBCD) from this link: (link for download is provided within this link)

I hope this helps

As I have been volunteering in the 'windows' category since the inception of AllExperts, which has now moved to numerous windows categories. I will therefore be happy to answer any Windows 7,8 and 10 based question. What can't I answer? Not much, as this is the main reason I volunteered here, because I am hopeful the questions I can not answer will allow me to investigate the problem so that I can answer it. The TIPS and SOFTWARE support through my website at can also be of some help.

I have owned my own computer consulting business for the past 17 years and since the very beginning I have volunteered with AllExperts in the hopes I would be able to learn from others mistakes and problems. The goal for me is to be able to research any problem I don't initially have the answer to, in the hopes I will be able to further benefit for my own clients when they come across a similar problem.
