Windows 8/restoring win 8 to a new hard drive

hi how r u?Ive got a question. Is there a way to create a image or a back up the operating system just in case the hard drive crashes.Isnt there some type of built in utility that comes with the os and you can access it to create an image. What i want to do is to be able to create an image just in case  the hard drive crash and to be able to  boot and install the os with a replacement drive if i need to.One concern i have is if there is a built in utility im wondering if it will only be a restore of the os.The programs that i install additional on the drive im not for sure if they will be included with the image that is built in even if i create the image after  there installations because im thinking a built in utility may only be designed to create an image of factory os  and software.Could you give me your thoughts on this subject.

Thanks for your quewstion!

First of all, if you have only windows 8 and not windows 8.1. please update first, Because you have to update to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update 2 nowadays to still receive free updates for your system

Please check if you have Windows 8.1 by:

Windows key & R and enter "winver" and run it to see what windows version you have at the moment.

If it says Verison 6.2 then you still have Windows 8

Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update 1 and 2 are like the Service Packs of older WIndows versions.

Here is how to update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1:

To Update Windows 8.1. to Update 1 and Update 2 use Windows Update Service:

please notice that it could be that you need to run Windows Update Service more than once.

Regarding your question you are right I wouldn't trust the internal function to make backups in windows either. I suggest using a free software for that like Drive Image XML:

Have used it myself and works great! :)
Hope this helps!
All the best!

Being an early adopter of Windows 8, I can answer a wide-range of questions regarding this new OS.

I had to support users regarding all kinds of Windows problems for many years, often "blind" over the telephone. I work in the IT industry for many years now filling in various positions for various IT and financial and health-care related companies.

I did an education as a Management Assistant in Informatics under the control of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in year 2003.
