Question
I have a friend who manages an apartment complex that has a Dell Dimension 3100 running a program that opens and closes the entry gate.
The PC does not boot all the way, it only gets to a black screen where it asks for a password.  She says that she cannot get to the BIOS, I'm not sure if she knows how to get into the BIOS.  I told her I would go out there tomorrow morning to give her a hand so I'm trying to find out any possible solutions before I get there.
Do you have any ideas or thoughts as to what the problem is and/or what I can try to fix it?
Thank you,
Landon

Answer
Hi Landon,

Have her start Windows in Safe Mode, go to Start, Run, type in MSCONFIG, under the Startup tab see if there is anything checked that doesn't look right. To verify if the programs checked under the Startup tab are required or not, go to:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Assuming that there is an anti-virus program installed, have her run a virus scan in Safe Mode.

If there is no AV program installed, download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.1.408 from:

http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=avg

Put that on a CD/floppy and install on her computer.

It could be spyware. As she cannot start Windows, you might want to download Spybot from:

http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html

Like above, put it on a CD/floppy and install on her computer.

Just did some checking, Windows XP should be installed on her computer, if that is the case, install AVG 8.0 from:

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html

Hope this helps!
Lorry
