I started using computers about 10 years ago and have grown to both love and hate it to say the least. I have studied computer programming and graduated with a bachelor's degree in computer science.

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a 95 NEC WIN95. The hard drive crashed. I ordered a used one and when trying to format I get a message saying "cannot format a network drive". Does it mean it won't work? Thank you

ANSWER: Hi Magali, how are you formatting this? Is this using the Windows 95 CD and did you use the following command:

format c:

Try using the Windows 98SE bootdisk:

Download and save that file to your desktop. Then insert a blank floppy diskette and double click on that file on your desktop. It will write the files to your floppy. Do this from another computer that's working...

Once that's done, take out the floppy and insert it into this one and boot off from it. Try formatting it again. If it still won't work, use fdisk instead. At the command prompt, type in fdisk and hit ENTER. Choose to delete the partition (I think it's option #3). Delete it and then exit fdisk and try formatting again.

QUESTION: I used the WIN 95 that came with the used hard drive and WIN 95 floppy which I accidentally erased. The return command was: no fixed disk present. I also noticed the hard drive had a little humming noise then sounding like running out of air in short burst. Do you think it crashed? I will continue to follow the instructions as soon as I find a cpu with floppy. Thank  you

Answer
Yep, if it gave you that message and the drive is giving out abnormal noises, it sounds like it's failing. You can buy another small hard drive for very cheap these days. I say get no more than a 40GB if you plan to keep Windows 95 on it....maybe even less.
