Subject: no sound!

Question
QUESTION: i accidentally deleted my sound card driver and now i have no volume, and the volume icon is no longer in the bottom right hand corner. i will appreciate any help you are willing to give.

ANSWER: I have questions: 1)  Windows 98 or XP? 2)  How do you know that you deleted the driver? Or is just the volume control missing? 3) The sound card driver will be reinstalled upon boot if the sound card is part of the mother card. If separate card, then driver software must be obtained from the sound card manufacturer.

QUESTION: 1)Windows 98 2)I was using the "Add/Remove Programs" and deleting some stuff that we never use. I am fairly certain that I deleted my sound card driver because, after that, no sound was coming from the computer and the "Audio" tab under "Multimedia" is completely grayed out. Also, in DirectX, under the "Sound" tab it says,"No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer." DirectX also gives no information on the Device or the Driver. I've done a little research on this and I thought I could do this myself (I'm kinda stubborn) but its been about a week and I've finally given up, and decided to ask an expert. I want to thank you for taking time to help me, and hopefully helping to solve this problem.

ANSWER: Answer: It sounds like you are correct and you need to re-install your sound card driver. download the driver from your sound card manufacturer's website or search by mfr. on Google. or try this site:  http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000208.htm
If you do not know the mfr. of the sound card, then download the free Belarc Adviser from: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html  which will scan your system.

QUESTION: I used the Belarc Advisor, and under Multimedia it says "None detected". I'm not sure if thats where the sound card manufacturer info would be but I don't know where else it would be.

Answer
1) Assuming that your sound card is part of the mother board, look for support by model & serial number on the website of your computer manufacturer. Download the sound driver and install. If the computer is more than 5 years old, the driver might not be available on the manufacturers site.
Try GOOGLE by Mfr and model number. Or Google by ID number stamped on the mother board. Or Google search on "download sound driver". Some sites have drivers for download listed by computer model.
2) If the sound card is separate, do the same except lookup by model or serial number of the sound card which sometimes is stamped on the card.
Observe proper grounding and turn computer power off when the computer covers are removed.
3)  Try the checklist on the website http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000208.htm
