Windows 95/98 - Missing Notepad and other options in right-click context menu

Expert: Flinix - 9/14/2008

Question
When I right click to open the context menue, the only create new options available to me are 'shortcut' and 'folder'. Recently 'text document', and several of the other default create new features dissapeared. I do not know what all of the missing options were, where to add the new key, or what the full paths are, so I am hesitant to start tinkering with the registry. I was hoping there was some way to restore the default values for all of the options that originally appeared under 'New' in the context menue. A reg file would be nice. I found one specifically for the problem I am talking about, but it is for XP and not ME.  Is there a way to restore the missing 'new' options? Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hello Jared. Yes there is a way to restore the missing 'new' add-ons. I am figuring that it is the same technique with restoring 'send to' as I had a similar problem. Under 'WINDOWS' in your main hard drive it lists all folders of Windows. Now I just took a look in my 'WINDOWS' folder, but I don't see the folder needed to alter in order to do it. In any case, I will tell you anyways. (1)Once the folder is found, open it. (2)Create shortcuts to the add-ons you want. As an example, text document simply made by making a shortcut of that program and moving that shortcut into the opened folder. Same with any others. (3)Now once all the needed items are in, rename the files so you can take off the "Shortcut To" so that won't show up in the name when you finally right-click and head over to new. Hope this helps and have a nice day!
