Windows 95/98 - Win98 system hangs during first stat up attempt

Expert: Flinix - 9/2/2008

Question
Hi Flinix,
Thanks for taking you your time out for my problem.
I have a Win98 machine at my home. When I try to start up, it hangs at the start up screen of win98 for about 5 minutes. It resumes after 5 minutes and continue loading Windows and ultimately the desktop appears.

Suppose I click the restart button of my machine while it is 'hanged' during the start up. It takes a little longer time displaying the initial intel motherboard image/icon during restart but afterwards it works fine (i.e., it doesn't hangs  during  display of win98 startup screen this time).

I know my problem is weird and not sure whether I was able to make you understand about my problem.
Please let me know if u need any further detail or have an answer.
Thanks.

Answer
Hello Kapil, I have never encountered such a problem, but I do have a few suggestions. Check out "Device Drivers" by right clicking "My Computer" and hitting 'properties'. Show all devices by dropping each section and check to see if any devices may be conflicting. A simple way to see this is to look for a yellow exclamation mark next to the device driver. If any are conflicting, that may be the problem. If none are conflicting and everything seems fine, try making a start-up disk. It's worth a try. I am very sorry, but I don't really know how to correct this particular situation, so these suggestions may very well not work. Good luck anyway and have a great day!
