Question
I picked up a Dell Inspiron 8100 from a swap shop that has the hard drive reformatted and did not come with a reinstall disk. I installed windows 98 on it to get it started; I figured that I could update it to Microsoft windows XP professional from there. I installed Microsoft windows XP professional on it the installation went well but its still coming up as Windows 98 what did I do wrong and how do I fix it

Answer
Hi Michael, is that XP install a new install or an upgrade install? You should have a choice before the install unless it's an upgrade only CD.

How many drives or partitions do you have in My Computer when you check it? See if any of those drives have a folder called Documents and Settings. If you have 2 or more drives, XP might have been installed onto one of them while Windows 98 remained intact on the main C: drive. Usually XP should see Windows 98 and create a dual boot menu for you though.
