Windows 95/98/Windows 98SE won't recognise new mouse

Question
My old mouse is on it's way, so, I invested in a new one.

The first mouse I bought, the PC would not boot up.  The first screen of bootup has DELL in huge letters and a bar underneath that goes from empty to solid - usually in 2-3 seconds.  With this mouse, the bar went 95% solid (although took longer to do so than usual), then froze up.

Plugging my old mouse back in, it would boot up without any problems.

So, I took it back, and got a different one (TEXET M3BS).  Got it home, plugged it in (PS 2 socket), booted up, and got the 'Windows Mouse support' screen telling me that the mouse was absent.

Again, if I plug my old mouse in, it boots up without any problem, but, I cannot get it to recognise the new one.

Both new mice were the same as my old one, left & right buttons and a scroll wheel, standard mouse, not optical, and connected with the PS2 socket.

Any ideas?

Hi Mark, make sure you post the reply directly to your question and not in the comment field where you posted your feedback. Thanks for the ratings...

Anyway, I edited my reply in order to answer your question since I saw your update in the comment field.

So switching any of those two new mice when Windows 98SE is loaded will again freeze? How about if you try plugging it directly as a USB device? You may do this before powering up and also try it within Windows if it fails. Try removing the original mouse first in Windows before plugging in the USB one to see if it helps.

Below is just the questions I asked earlier. Leaving it below just for reference:

======================================

Are both of these new mice PS2 types or just using the PS2 to USB adapter?

Have you tried plugging them in directly when Windows 98SE is loaded and logged in? See if that works if you haven't tried it yet.

The POST should have recognized those two mice especially if they are direct PS2 types.
