Windows 95/98 - booting up

Expert: Kevin - 5/23/2009

Question
QUESTION: To start my computer when i turn it on just runs and runs like it is trying to boot up all the way. A guy i know told me to just replace the pci card. So i took it out of my friends comp and swapped it out and the same thing happend. Hopefully u can point me in the right direction. I am not very good with comps, and don't want to get shafted by bringing it to a store.

ANSWER: Hi Matt, what do you mean by it runs and runs? Does anything show up on the screen at all?

Did you make any changes to this computer recently (be it a new software or hardware install before this problem began)?

QUESTION: No i haven't made any changes to it at all. All the fans run and it acts like it wants to boot up. Nothing shows up on the screen just says there is no signal. One day went to turn it on and nothing was coming up on the screen. Thats when i found out something was wrong with it.

Answer
Matt, for the PCI card that you swapped was it the video card? Do you have an on-board video on your computer? You can tell easily by looking at the back and see if there is another video port for the monitor.

It sounds like the video card or on-board video is malfunctioning. If that card you replaced was the video card, try putting it into another PCI slot to see if it helps.
