AboutMichael Troy Expertise I have lots of answers for problems with defrag, clock time, performance, system resources, problems with passwords, opening files, etc. I also probably know of a freeware/shareware application for anything you want to do: sharing Internet, firewalls, games, utilities, graphics, audio, etc.
Experience I am the Director of Information Systems for a large law firm. I handle all sorts of hardware and software problems for over 300 users who use Windows 95/98. I also have a home network of six computers.
Question QUESTION: I'm having a problem with my Dell laptop. It was acting funny so I did a virus scan. It showed that there was a virus but froze so that I couldnt do anything with it. I had to shut it down and when i restarted this is what came up: "C000021a Session manager intialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000034, Sytem has been shut down." When I restart the same thing comes up with a blue screen. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I appreciated any advise you can give me. Thanks
ANSWER: Hi Karen,
It is possible that you have a corrupted system file or bad hardware, but a virus is a real possibility too. There are a number of viruses that can interfere or cause problems when an anti-virus attempts to detect and remove them.
When I go after such a problem, I usually try to use a number of different programs, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Vipre a all good ones that can be downloaded for free. You may want to try to run some or all of these from Safe Mode.
I hope this helps!

QUESTION: Thanks for your speedy reply Mike. I couldn't get the pc to start up in Safe Mode either. I tried reinstalling WindowsXP and was then able to run AVG which was already on the pc. It did detect 5 viruses! One was not able to be removed. I believe it was win32/heur. The pc was asking me to insert the "unload disc". Not sure what that is but I don't have one. I also keep getting a pop up that for some reason isn't being blocked. It comes up as my home page. Is there a way to get rid of this?
Answer If AVG is detecting a certain infected file, you can try to go in and remove the file manually. Just delete it. In most cases, with these files, you will need for run an "unload" before you can delete it. Sometimes running another program can help to. You might want to try the Vipre program I mentioned in my first answer.
Some viruses are so embedded that I often find it easier to back up my critical data, reformat the drive, and reinstall everything. Hopefully, it won't come to that.
