Windows 95/98 - Windows98 repairing

Expert: Kevin - 6/14/2009

Question
Sir, I have win98 in my system. Now I have problem of not recieving proper print out for some of my files. And some programes are not running.
I want to repair or reinstall my win98 OS without losing any of my files (including dos files) and programes on my hard disk.

Answer
Hi Mustanzir,

I highly recommend that you backup your data files (documents, favorites, etc.) regardless since I don't suggest taking any chances of something going wrong.

Once you do that, you will need to bootup with your Windows 98 floppy boot diskette (if needed) and then use the Windows 98 CD to perform an upgrade install. This should overwrite all the current system files with newer ones and leave your data intact. Do not go with the new install as that will wipe out everything.

If you need more details, read the below:

Skip the part where it asks you to delete files:
Unless you're doing a repair reinstall, type the command c:\windows\command\deltree /y c:\windows and press Enter. Deleting your old files could take time, but the /y switch suppresses confirmation prompts, so take a break.

The above won't apply to you since you want to keep your files.

Kevin.
