Windows 95/98 - Can't access secure sites and error 0x00000485

Expert: Kevin - 8/16/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hello. I have a WIN.98SE PC. I am using Internet Explorer and Firefox on broadband and on dial-up. Both browsers allow access to http sites but neither allow access to https sites. When I try to access the Mozilla addons site, for instance,Firefox says "Firefox cannot connect securely to addons.mozilla.org because the SSL protocol has been disabled". Internet Explorer says "The page cannot be displayed. Cannot find server or DNS error" On Tools, OPtions, Encryption, use SSL3.0 and useTSL1.0 are both ticked.  I have tried to re-register 10 Regsvr32.ddl files and 4 of them give "failed Get Last error returns 0x00000485".
I should be most grateful if you could tell me how to correct this error and hopefully enable my access to securer sites.
KInd regards, Stan

ANSWER: Hi Stan, there are a handful of reasons why this may be happening. Were you ever able to access secure sites before? If so, did you make any changes recently prior to this problem? If you have security programs installed, make sure they are not blocking this.

You may also take a look at the below site that contains a handful of possible solutions to this problem:

QUESTION: Hi Kevin, I thank you very much for your prompt reply. This Win 98SE PC is my old spare which I have hardly used in the last 4 years, but I am trying to resurrect it so that I can use it to experiment with Linux. I think I remember having the same problem 4 years ago. I have AVG anti-virus, but I disabled it a few weeks ago.
I have used the link you provided to Bleeping Computers and I will try to work thro. their 7 fixes. One of their suggestions is "Verify that Internet Explorer is configured to use SSL 2.0 and SSL3.0" but mine only shows SSL3.0 and TSL1.0 I can't find SSL2.0. Do you think this is significant? Stan.

ANSWER: Hi Stan, you probably don't have the SSL 2.0 version because you have an older version of Internet Explorer.

Do you want to go with Linux full blown on this computer? If so, you can just pop in the Linux CD and install it. You may format this Windows 98SE partition if there is no data you want to keep.

QUESTION: Hi Kevin, I thank you for your prompt reply 14.8.09.  My old Win 98SE PC is dual boot Linux Ubuntu / Win 98SE. This dual boot PC is situated on the second floor of my house. It has a USB wireless adapter to allow windows to connect to broadband via the wireless router of my Win XP PC which is located on the ground floor. I cannot connect Ubuntu to broadband on the second floor because I cannot find a USB adapter that is guaranteed to work with Linux, if you know of one could you please let me know?  The hard drive on the dual boot PC is only 40GB and the Windows partition has only 500MB spare. I have an unused 120GB HDD that I would like to fit as a second drive, but as I have never attempted this before I'm reluctant to start. If I start and get in a mess, do you think you may be able to give me advice to help get it working?
I worked thro. the seven items in Bleeping Computers. I completed them all successfully except the last one i.e. "Check the file integrity of the IE and Outlook". It said "Cannot find the file sfc/scannow or one of its components". I still have my same problem.
I also went to a Microsoft knowledge base article suggested by Bleeping Computers. The article was 303807 "The page cannot be displayed, error message when you try to view a web page on a secure site"  It said "Your HKey-Current User registry hive does not have valid registry entries that point to your application folder or your computer is not using 128 bit encryption. (I have already checked; the incryption is 128 bit) Regards Stan.

Answer
I can try to search for a drive for Ubuntu. What is the exact brand and model of that USB wireless adapter?

What are you trying to do with the 120GB HDD? Do you want to move the entire 40GB into it or use it for just Windows 98SE or Ubuntu?
