Windows 95/98 - can't reset clock or go to control panel

Expert: Kevin - 8/19/2009

Question
This is for Windows ME (there are no experts listed for ME). If you can't help I understand.

My system clock is 45 minutes slow. I know that I could change the battery but it still works. The problem is that when I try to change the time and hit "apply" the hourglass icon comes up and the computer does nothing.

In addition, if I go to control panel and try to change the settings for "display", not just the clock by system colors or whatever the same thing happens. Sometimes the computer "hangs" and I have to restart it.

Any suggestions? In other words it's not just about the clock.

Answer
Hi Gray, sounds like it's a problem with Windows itself. Does it hang when you do other things or just when applying these setting changes?

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc and hit OK. Leave it on the first option and let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD. Otherwise, it will auto-close after it's done. In Windows ME it's called the System File Protection, but I hope the command (sfc) still remains the same. If it does, it will run...
