Windows 95/98 - Re-install issue in Win 98

Expert: Michael Troy - 9/29/2009

Question
I have old Pentium (R) Pro system 200 Mhz , 384 MB Ram 20 GB HDD.
I tried to re-install windows 98 in my system.
The problem is after formatting hard disk by fdisk
whenever I try to run setup from the CD or from the hard disk
the set up stops giving messages such as
General protection fault .... or SUWIN Error
Krn;l386.exe or sometimes user.exe (White message Box)

Thus in other words the set up never starts technically only the inital screen is displayed
. Please tell me if any bios settings or dos commands are required to run before running the setup.exe or executable file

I do not require any data from hard disk as I have already taken back up on CD

Thanks

Answer
Hello,

Sounds like a BIOS problem.  Take a look at this MS Knowledgebase article to see if it helps:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224836

Also, you may want to see if there is a BIOS upgrade available for your system.  If so, you may want to install that before trying to reinstall Windows.

I hope this helps!
