i have a maxtor basicsTM 300GB external HDD which has been detected on this compaq presario 1685 notebook with winME. After connecting the HDD thro' USB port, the HDD is detected as mass storage device, and is successfully installed with the drivers. the drive also shows up in the hardware profile, BUT I couldn't find a new drive as in WinXP or Vista, neither a new drive letter is taking me to the HDD contents. Plz help !!
ANSWER: Hi Navin, I'm not sure I quite understand the question here. Is it found by Windows ME and not by Windows XP/Vista? If so, right click on My Computer and go to Manage. Then on the left side, go down to Disk Management and see if you see the 300GB drive there. If so, right click on it and select the option to add the drive letter. After giving it a drive letter, you should see it in My Computer as the letter you assigned to it.
QUESTION: Dear Kevin,
Sorry for the confusion. I have this old laptop with winME, wherein the drive was installed successfully and was not showing up in 'My Computer'. I tried assigning a drive letter as per your instruction (but in winME) thro' harware profile and found the drive as'removable disk'. But now as i tried opening the contents, comp asked me to format it, which i did not (cant afford to delete the data). so i cross checked the HDD with winXP and Vista where it was detected on some of the PCs with winXP and all PCs with Vista. the data is also safe in the HDD. please help with accessing the hdd in WinME comp. the drive letter thing is not working. Thanks
Answer Hi Navin, thanks for clearing that up. The problem might be that Windows ME can't read NTFS (assuming that's the file format you have for the external hard drive). If that's the case, download NTFS for Windows 98/ME and see if that will get it working:
