Question QUESTION: got the bsod for inaccessible boot device - moved drive to another pc as slave and did scandisk w/ auto repair, moved drive back to server pc as master and did repair for winnt and MS backoffice. Now my password is blank, i can see my network and can access other servers when asked for password but i can't access this server from the network without my administrative password?? What am I doing wrong? Did i miss a setting on the repair? I can't start Net Logon either because "access is denied" - which is obvious without my administrative password. I can't wipe this machine cuz we have an old sales database on here and we can't locate the software to reinstall-working on getting the replacement software but it will still be a nightmare to get setup and would really like to avoid formatting if at all possible. Please help!
ANSWER: Hi Tam,
Unfortunately, if you don't have the admin password, you'll have to rebuild the machine from scratch. There isn't a way you can go in and update that password or hack/crack it.
I would pull all of the data you need off of the drive and then wipe it, so you can start fresh. This may have been caused by changing its role and moving it to another computer.
Cheers,
Chris

QUESTION: I HAVE the administrative password. To simplify, since the repair, I have to just hit the enter key to logon to the pc. If I go to the change password screen, I can't hit "enter" for the original password I actually have to enter my old admin password "boss" and then "change" to the new password boss in a feeble attempt to figure where the password went!
I would like to attempt another repair or reinstall, when and where do you assign the "role" of the server to be a BDC?
Answer Hi Tim,
The role of BDC is assigned to a server during the install of Windows NT and its original configuration. There's no way that I am aware of to go into an existing machine and configure an existing install to become a BDC.
