Question
Hi Chris  Could you help please. Have just acquired a pc which has been used in a doctor's surgery as part of a network The os is windows nt workstation version 4 build 1381 service pack 6. It was my intention to upgrade to windows 2000 but when I tried the operation was unsuccessful due to the following message "unable to create, locate or modify a critical file C:\$WIN_NT$~BT\[winnt.sif]needed to start windows.      What should I do?

               Cheers   Geoff

Answer
Hi Geoff,

You'd have to completely wipe out the hard drive during the Windows 2000 setup. It should ask you if you want to delete the partitions - you'll say yes and this will wipe out all the programs and data on the drive and start Windows 2000 from scratch.

Cheers,

Chris
