Windows NT - task manager/startup programs

Expert: Chris Schuh - 9/7/2007

Question
my friend  said my computer is running too many processes.  I activated the multimeter ram watcher and when all windows are closed it still runs as high as 70 percent sometimes.  I am wondering if some items in task mgr. are viruses or unsafe/unecessary programs.  Also there is something in my windows defender startup programs with the extension name KdbStub.Exe.  Its install date is 3 months prior to the date I purchased the compaq presario brand new, and it's only 2 months old, but the extension is not digitally signed, cannot verify the publisher, but still says it wasn't shipped with the operating system.  I am wondering if I should remove it and also I am looking for a good website or comparison list of what should or shouldn't be running in tsk mgr or any file names in it that could be dangerous or hinder computer performance.

Answer
Hi Greg,

Well, there are a couple things you can do.

1) Install something like Norton or McAfee to check your computer for spyware, adware, viruses, etc.

2) Write out each file name that is running as a task and then individually google search those file names.

With the second option, you'll find a sites that tell you what the file name is and what it does. This takes a while, but it's free and you can start doing it yourself now.

Once you find things you want to remove, please let me know if you need any help removing them.

Cheers,

Chris
