Windows NT - win2000PRO downgrade to NT (accidently) NTDETECT FAILED

Expert: Chris Schuh - 1/22/2007

Question
windows 2000 Professional was installed on the computer.  there was a problem with Word, and i put the NT disk in by mistake (it asked for win2000 PRO disk)  after it began installing i quickly realized this was not the disk i needed.  I cancelled the installation, and i thought everything was fine.  The computer worked fine, i still hadn't fixed the problem with Word, but everything else was working fine.  My boss rebooted the computer and this message popped up.  NTDETECT FAILED status 000000001  or something similar to that.  i have since rebooted the computer plenty of times, with the same response.  i tried to just go ahead and load NT but it says the partition is too large to formatt or something, i don't know exactly what all that means.  so i cancelled it, and i don't have the windows 2000 Professional cd, there are important files on the computer that if at all possible need to be intact.  PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Hi Ryan,

Well, things aren't looking good - Windows NT and 2000 are very hard to restore from this type of situation. The computer itself will require to be formatted and re-installed with Windows, so you'll need a disc to to do that.

You may also want to try and make a boot diskette from a working Windows 2000 machine. From there, you may be able to access the files and copy them off of that hard drive and onto a network drive or antoher floppy diskette.

Cheers,

Chris
