Windows Networking - Cannot access computer on Workgroup

Question
Hello,

I have a major issue, I have a network of 4 computers, 3 are windows 2000 pro and one is windows xp.  They all hookup via a modem/router.  3 of the computers work just fine, but the one windows 2000 pro computer is having errors trying to view one of the other computers files. (network path not found). It can access the others and the computer that it can't access, can access it back.  It can even see the computer that it can't access. This computer is hooking up through USB and the others are ethernet.  Can you help shed some light on the situation.  It is driving me nuts!  I disabled all firewalls and sharing is enabled.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapt and still nothing.

Answer
Hello Josh,

How are you doing? Nothing problem with you computers. Simple issue they are facing. One computer is unable to find all the remaining. So its a problem with name resolution. Windows use either NetBIOS or DNS names to identify the systems in network. Every system has ip address so it is difficult to remember every ip address, so we use human english names for our computers. But pc's can communicate only through ip only. We will type english name and system communicate thorugh ip associated with that english name. So some translation from english name to ip is going on in the background. To perform this translation, systems will depend on some servers like WINS and DNS. They are name resolution servers used in larger networks. In your case you have only 4 systems. So the server is not necessary. We have some files in our systems, they also do the same thing but we need to enter the english name and ip address in that file of all computers in network. It is very difficulty process if we have more computers. You have only 4 computers, so you can do this. Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc there you will find lmhosts.sam file. Open it with notepad. And enter the IP Address and corresponding system name in same line. There are some examples in the file. follow as they are. Input all the four systems ip addresses and thier names. After finishing save it. Open command prompt and try pinging all the systems with ipaddresses and as well as their system names. If the ping is working fine......communication is open. Enjoy your work.

I Hope this is informative for you. I would like to thank you for asking me this question.

Thanks & regards,
