Question
QUESTION: Hello,
My concern today is regarding downloads. I have trouble downloading items like Mozilla Firefox and Adobe Flash Player. Do I have a setting disabled?
Thank you.

ANSWER: Hi There Stephanie.

For Adobe Flash Player, if you are downloading via Internet Explorer, there may be instances where a pop up or Active X control blocker stops the downloads from occurring.  You may see something on the top of your screen if you try to download.  You should click on ALLOW at the top of the screen, to allow the Active X applciation to install.

Then, try running the Adobe Flash Player install again.  It should install it for you.

As for Mozilla Firefox, there again may be a download which installs an ActiveX control.  You should enable this on the top of your screen and try the download again.

Active X installations are usually not harmful, but are usually blocked because it could be a virus or an installation that may harm your computer - that is why the warnings may come up.

A few questions though:  1)  Is your computer Windows XP or Windows Vista?  2)  Do you run Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7?

If you are running Vista and/or Internet Explorer 7, there is a lot more 'blocking' of applications when you are trying to install them.

Anyways, get back to me, and I can go into more detail in helping you get this resolved.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thank you for your assitance once again.

First, My computer uses Windows XP. Secondly, I run on Internet Explorer 7. I understand that there is more blocking of applications which makes it more difficult to do downloads, etc.

I followed your instructions for installing Mozilla Firefox, however, I noticed that the Active X does not pop up. Anyways, I finish the installation process and I close the window, and click on the Mozilla icon and screen does not pop up. What do you think the issue is?

Besides having trouble with downloads like Adobe and Mozilla, I also have trouble with www.brainfuse.com.
It requires a download which I have tried downloading. Yet, the same situation happens and it reads: Loading... please wait. It then freezes at that point (not loading) atnd does not bring me to the correct screen. On the other hand, my sister downloaded this program onto her computer and surprisingly, it works.

Thank you for your patience.

Answer
Hi Stephanie.

Sometimes these issues are mind-boggling...so no worries!  We'll have to try a few things.

Instead of trying Mozilla from your desktop icons, try it from your Start Menu.  Go to Start, Programs, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox - this may work.

Do you have a pop up blocker or Windows Firewall enabled?  These may block the execution of these files.

Assuming you have a pop up blocker added into your browser:
First, look on your browser (IE7, and see if you have a Google Toolbar, Yahoo Toolbar or any type of toolbar that is similar).  Look for an icon that might indicate there are pop ups being blocked (a button that is pushed in).  Press this button so that the button gets unpressed, and disables the pop up blocker.  Try the downloads again.

Let's try turning off your windows firewall:

-Click on Start/Settings/Control Panel (select Classic View from the left side) and double click on Windows Firewall
-for now, turn it to OFF and try installing Firefox without it.

-click OK to close the firewall, but from the same Control Panel do this:
-double click on Internet Properties and click on the Privacy Tab
-uncheck on BLOCK POP-UPS.

Now, let's see if this works for you.

If it doesn't please let me know.  Good luck!
