Windows Networking - Windows Remote Desktop

Expert: Hrire Mikaelian - 8/15/2008

Question
Hi Hrire

I have a home peer-to-peer network with 3 computers, 2 of them are running WinXP and 1 is on Win2K.  They are connected by a Netgear DG834 router.  I want to run Remote Desktop to access the Win2K PC from on of the XP PCs, but when I open Remote Desktop I get the error message "The WORKGROUP domain/workgroup does not contain any Terminal servers."

Can you help me?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Neil

Windows 2000 (out of the box) never automatically installs Terminal Services.  XP automatically installs it, so it was easy to connect in.

For Windows 2000, you need to manually add the service to your workstation.  This is how you would do it:

-Start Control Panel (Start - Settings - Control Panel)
-Select Add/Remove Programs
-Select Configure Windows in the left hand pane
-Click the Components button
-Click Next at the wizard
-Check the "Terminal Services" and "Terminal Services Licencing" components. Click Next
Click Finish
The machine will reboot

These instructions are approximate.  I don't have a Windows 2000 workstation here, only a Windows 2000 server.  It should be very similar though.

If you have any problems with this, don't hesitate to contact me again.
