Question QUESTION: Hello,
I purchased an emachine - XP home - desktop computer at Walmart about a year ago for my son.
I have 2 other computers hooked up to a wireless network and have been trying to find the mac address to hook up this last computer to the wireless network.
I was able to find the mac address on the other 2 computers using --- Start (cmd) - when the DOS window pops up I type (ipconfig /all). After I do that it says "ipconfig is not recognized as an internal or external command".
Do you have any other suggestions how I could find the MAC Address?
ANSWER: Hi James.
You did the right thing, and I'm wondering why it gave that error.
Just to confirm, you spelled IPCONFIG correctly? Try IPCONFIG without the /all option. If it still doesn't work. Try this:
-From the command prompt type cd c:\windows\system32 and press enter
-now, try Ipconfig /all and if that works there must be something wrong in your path statement (it's in a configuration file, although it's not a super major issue).
If this doesn't work,
-go into your Control Panel (Start/settings/control panel), and click on Network Connections
-right click on Wireless Network connection (not the Local area connection), and do a left click on STATUS.
-then, click on the Details button.
-Your Physical Address is the wireless network's MAC address.
I do hope this helped you out!

QUESTION: Hello,
I'm guessing the computer itself is messed up.
After typing c:windowssystem32 I typed in ipconfig /all.
A DOS window pops up and closes immediately.
The other option using the control panel didn't work either because the "status" option isn't highlighted so I cant click on it.
Keep in mind a group of boys 12 and under were using this computer for the last year and I fear the damage surpasses my computer knowledge.
Thank you so much for your help, if you have any other options let me know, otherwise I really do appreciate the help up to this point.
James
Answer Just to verify:
You are typing this in the command prompt? (Black screen?)
Your command prompt shouldn't disappear when you type in IPCONFIG /ALL
Also, if you have a virus scanner installed please run a virus check soon.
So:
-click on Start/RUN and in there type cmd and click on OK
-then in the black screen type IPCONFIG /all and let's see what happens.
Thanks
