About Michael Troy
Expertise
I have a fair amount of experience in peer-to-peer networking using Windows 95/98. I can answer questions about hardware, networking software, protocol settings, etc. I have some client-server experience, but not a lot with Windows-based servers. I can also give some advice on home network security: VPN, firewalls, anti-virus, etc.

Experience
I am the Director of Information Systems for a large law firm which connects about 300 users over five offices via a wide area network. We use client-server, peer-to-peer, WINS, remote access, VPN, DSL Internet, and proxy servers.

I also have a peer-to-peer network of six computers at home, with file and print sharing, remote access, and shared Internet access with a firewall.

Windows Networking - Broadband internet

Expert: Michael Troy - 8/28/2009

Question
Dear Expert,

I have a broadband internet connection. Every time when I turn on my PC I need to connect manually to the internet, so my question is can I setup the connection to be always connected to the internet without need to connect manually.

My modem is Motorola external broadband.

Thanks I advance.

Answer
If you have an internet provider that requires a manual connection, and have to click on an icon to gain access, you may want simply copy that shortcut into your startup folder so it runs automatically when you turn on your computer.

If you have an "always on" internet connection, but have to reset hardware everytime you restart your computer, you might want to consider getting an internet router so that it will maintain the connection open all the time.

I hope this helps!
- Mike
