I have what on the surface seems to be a very simple problem but I have tried to fix it for nearly a month via friends, the Microsoft knowledgebase, and newsgroups with no luck.
Here is the problem. I am connecting two computers together using Direct Cable Connection (DCC)(which I have done before successfully on other machines). Both machines now are running Win98SE. The problem is on my Host computer. The other machine is fine. For my Host computer I need to set it so that it will share files. However, when I either 1) Left click on Network Neighborhood and then right click on "properties" and then click on "add" and then click on "add" again so I can get the dialog box and choose "Microsoft" file and printer sharing I don't get any dialog box after the second "add". In fact nothing happens at all. No box and no error. 2) Also if I click on the box "file and printer sharing" after going to properties above I do get a dialog box with check boxes and I can check share files and/or share printer. But when I am instructed to restart the computer the boxes are unchecked and if I right click on any files (before or after restarting the computer) I don't get a "share" option for the file.
I have gone through the procedure to replace three files noted in the Microsoft Knowledgebase article: Network Components Missing in Network Tool in Control Panel
> > http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;193637
but that did not help. Please don't tell me to re-install Windows. My sense is that this is due to some missing or corrupt file. I know I can also connect the computers together with a reverse Ethernet cable but I'd still need to enable sharing on the host machine. So you can see that is the real issue here. Any help you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated. Take care.........Zel
Answer Running sfc would/should/could fix any corrupt dll's or system files. Start, Run, type sfc and hit enter. You'll need the cabs or CD if it wants to replace files. If that doesn't work and you've been working on this for a month, then reloading would be my only suggestion.
