Windows Networking - Home Network

Expert: Sean Oriyano - 10/22/2007

Question
I am trying to set up a home network with a direct cat5 cable.  I have done it before a few times, on diff. computers.

This time, I'm trying to network a ME and XP computer.  I seem to have the ME one working, as I can ping it's IP from the same computer.

However, the new XP computer, I cannot get to ping itself.  I have turned off all the firewalls I can find (Norton, Symantec, and windows), and still nothing.

I notice when I click on the network connection (LAN), it shows connected, but when I click on 'details' of the connection, it shows up blank.  IP address, Subnet address, are all blank.  I have tried repairing the connection many times, nothing changes.  I have a feeling this is where the problem lies.

I have manually configured the address to a different one then the ME computer.  Same workgroup.  It seems like there is something very simple that I'm missing.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Amanda

Answer
If this is happening it means that your router or computer that you are sharing out an internet connection from is not handing out IP addresses.  I would suggest that you enable your router to hand out IP adresses dynamically or configure internet connection sharing.  If you don't do either one of these you will need to configure IP addresses manually.
