About Michael Troy
Expertise
I have a fair amount of experience in peer-to-peer networking using Windows 95/98. I can answer questions about hardware, networking software, protocol settings, etc. I have some client-server experience, but not a lot with Windows-based servers. I can also give some advice on home network security: VPN, firewalls, anti-virus, etc.

Experience
I am the Director of Information Systems for a large law firm which connects about 300 users over five offices via a wide area network. We use client-server, peer-to-peer, WINS, remote access, VPN, DSL Internet, and proxy servers.

I also have a peer-to-peer network of six computers at home, with file and print sharing, remote access, and shared Internet access with a firewall.

Windows Networking - Can I remotely turn on my computer?

Expert: Michael Troy - 10/12/2005

Question
Hey!
It's interesting to know whether I can turn on my pc from school or somewhere else. I have already tried http://logmein.com, but it doesn't work if my pc is turned off... so what should I do if I want to start my turned off pc from school?? Should I install some software, or change the BIOS settings... or what? Please help me if you can!
Thanks!
Vlado

Answer
Hi Vlado,

Remote activation really depends on whether the ability to do so is available in your BIOS and works with your network card or modem.  If your BIOS supports it, there should be a setting for it in your BIOS settings.  If it does not support it, you are out of luck.
