About James Milligan
Expertise
Experience with Windows 2000, XP, and of course Vista. I currently run Vista Home Premium, as it is the most common, on my main computer. I also have an XP desktop, and a Linux laptop - all bases covered! I'm eager to answer any question you throw at me. If you have a question, and I know the answer, then I will answer it straight away. If I don't know the answer, I will search the internet and ask other experts in the field about it - I am determined to answer every question asked!

Experience
I've used Windows computers since an early age, and have used Vista since the day it came out. I use it on my main computer, and customise it a great deal. I regularly help people setting up their computers, and maintaining them. I'm used to novices and experts alike, and don't believe in just literally fixing a problem - I like to explain why the problem occurred and how it can be fixed in the future.

Windows Vista - Change music player used when clicking play all button in a music folder

Expert: James Milligan - 9/2/2008

Question
I am really fed up with windows media player, and pretty much anything microsoft.

I need to know how I can change the player used when opening a folder and pressing the play all button.  I have changed all of the defaults to VLC, but it still opens wmp when I click on it.

It gives another option to open it with vlc when I select a music file, but that still opens with wmp when I select the whole folder.

Is there any way to change this?

Answer
Try going to Control Panel and typing in the search bar 'Set Associations'.

Go to 'Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program'.

Select the extension you want (.mp3 for example) and choose the program.

If you want to disable access to WMP, go back to 'Default Program's and select 'Set Program Access and Computer Defaults'.

Expand whichever option is selected (the radio box) and uncheck the checkbox for 'Enable access to this program' next to Windows Media Player.

Hopefully this should solve your problems.
