Windows XP/How to keep kids off internet

Question
I figured out how to create different accounts for my kids
but how do I then deny access to the internet for a particular user? I have XP Home.
Thanks,
Neil

Answer
Hi Neil,

Without third party software, it's not really possible to restrict access to programs by user on any version of XP, and   XP Home doesn't have a policy editor like XP Pro does, also XP Home can't join a domain either so it would be unable to set policies from a domain controller either. However, there are a  few things that you might be able to do, first check with your ISP as they may offer a parental control option that could restrict access to the Internet or allow access  to only sites that you specify.

Also, there is quite a  few Internet  filtering programs out there, but computer-savy kids can figure out how to over-ride them in most cases.

Also what you could do is login as an admin, go to network connections, right click on Local Network Connection, then select disable if its offered.  If it works, this would cut that computer completely off the network,  including the Internet, however,  if you have any shared printers or directories on that computer, they won't be accessible from other computer systems in the house until you re-enable the network connection.

I haven't reviewed  any of the third party Internet locking  programs yet, but I have reviewed a program that can control  access to a computer to certain times and logs them off automatically, I am not sure if it will work on Home Edition  though.

Hope this helps a bit,
 Jeff

I can answer questions about Windows XP and 2000 that include installation, setup, how to do certain things with those operating systems (Some examples are un-installing drivers, creating limited accounts, etc.), I can also answer questions about securing wireless networks and most wireless router configuration questions as well. What I can not answer (at least not at this time), is how to write scripts in Vb Script or Windows Scripting Host format. NOTE: As of 3/29/2008, I have now finished college for my AS degree in Internet Technology! I am now a graduate of Keiser University and in case your courious, I ended up with a 3.6 GPA which means that I will be graduating with honors when I walk in May. (Cum Laude). It also means that responses should be a lot faster, too. :-) Thank you. PS Follow me on Twitter and see if I am answering questions here! http://www.twitter.com/christian_tech

Experience

I have been with Windows since it first came out and involved with computers before Windows even came out (I had the commodore Vic 20). Here is a trivia question: What was AOL's original names from startup? A. Quantum Link for the Commodore computer systems, Pc-Link (DOS) and AOL (Windows). I have installed and configured several networks, wired and wireless, I also run Christian Computer Services (http://www.christiancomputerservices.info) where I do on-site local area service/tech-support calls and I also educate users in computer and family security.
