Question
XP installation from USB cd drive
Question   hi,I have just purchased an used ultraportable and as these are smaller than standard laptops, they don't have an optical drive. The laptop comes with windows 2000 but I want to install XP,and also I will have to repartition the whole drive, but I don't seem to find information on how to install from USB.
If I buy an USB CD drive and I put the Windows XP disc it  it ,will I be able to boot from it,and thus being able to install the OS?
The laptop is fairly recent,an HP NC4000 centrino 1.4 ghz.
Thank you for your help and regards
Luigi

Answer
Hi Luigi,

The answer to your question is yes and no.  You can install XP from a USB CD drive, but you need to be able to boot off USB devices which I can't tell if you computer can or not.  In your computer look at the BIOS settings and see if there is a setting that allows you to boot off a USB device, if it has that option then yes you can do what you are asking.

Good luck,
Sean
