Windows XP - Adobe Reader 8.1.1

Expert: Saad Shawwa - 10/5/2008

Question
QUESTION: Greetings Saad.

I'm very much computer illiterate and I cannot uninstall the above Adobe Reader. At present, I cannot read any PDF document which is annoying. It did once work so I must have done something to upset it.

When I tried to uninstall it via the Control Panel and add/remove link, I get the message about a  "patch package" and to contact the "application vendor". I've tried contacting Adobe, but cannot find a link to talk to anyone.

I'd be very grateful for any help you may care to give.

Sincerely,

Bertie (aged 75 in south Wales).

ANSWER: Hello Bertie how are you doing

if it not being removed from add/remove program under control panel
then the safest way to remove it is by downloading windows installer cleanup utility
download directly from

http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1b...

download it install it then run the software from start menu -> all programs - > windows install clean up

locate  "adobe reader 8.x.x"  and click on it ,  then press remove button , by doing that you will remove adobe from your system.

then open this link
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html?promoid=BUIGO

and download the latest  acrobat reader

if you need more help feel free to contact me back anytime

take care and good luck Bertie

QUESTION: My goodness Saad, that was a quick reply! Unfortunately the only place Adobe 8.1.1 is listed is in the Add/Remove programs. It is not in the All Programs list and a Search failed to find it. Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.1 is listed and that works fine.

I downloaded msicuu2 but couldn't use it as when I clicks on the Adobe 8.1.1 in Add/Remove programs, I just get the Patch message. I clicked on msicuu2 but that informs me it wants to uninstall itself!

I'm totally baffled now and I thank you for your most speedy and kind help. If you can do any more for me then I'll put you in for Sainthood!

Gratefully yours,
                 Bertie.

Answer
Hello Bertie how are you doing

im just wondering when you installed the windows cleanup utility the msicuu2 , did you run the program from start menu - all program -> windows install cleanup utility ?

if you did not ,you have to run it , the program is called "windows install clean up utility and it is located in start menu -> all programs-> windows install cleanup utility

run it and you will get something that looks like add/remove , locate adobe 8.x.x and highlight it and click on the remove button.

but if you did that and it was not listed in the "windows cleanup utility" then your only solution is to reinstall adobe reader 8 or 9 again and then remove it normally from the add remove

and you can download it and install it from
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html?promoid=BUIGO

let me know the results

feel free to contact me back
take care and good luck Bertie :)
