Expertise
I can pretty much answer any question related to PC`s. My ratings speak for themselves. All I ask is that you ask the question in English.....I do not understand gibberish and I will ask you to resend the question if I cannot understand it. I will do the best I can answering your questions. I've been working with computers for well over 20 years.

Windows XP - Installing windows XP on a raid configuration.

Expert: Michael Tedeschi - 10/7/2008

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

My brother just got his new PC and the technicians at the store installed a 30 days trial of Vista on it.
In addition ,I asked them to make a raid configuration on that system.
Ihe only problem is, that I want to replace Vista with Windows XP..I understood that it's not quite the same as installing it on a regular system and that I may encounter problems like windows XP won't recognize a raid of 1TB (two 500GB HDs).

I will be grateful for guidance on how to install Windows XP instead Vista on a 1TB raid.

thanks ahead,
           Or

-------
The PC's specs just in case..

Motherboard: Asus p5e x38
HDs: 2X Seagate 500GB (bound together in a raid)
Graphics card: Sapphire ATI Radeon hd4850
RAM: 4 sticks of OCZ's 1GB 1066

By the way, when I looked in 'my computer' I didn't see the full capacity of my HD's, i just saw partition C with its size 68GB...is anything wrong here?

ANSWER: I would sent it back and insist that they install XP on it.  Trust me, trying to figure out proper drivers for many systems that have vista is a nightmare.  You are paying for a system, have them make it the way you want it.

XP might not even recognize the size of that drive, but it will be their problem when they try to install XP.

QUESTION: Thanks for the reply.

I think I can deal with it on my own so I wont be sending them PC again..they gave me enough problems while waiting for it to arrive..

Anyway, I changed my mind, I want to:

-Cancel the RAID configuration.
-Format the two hard drives.
-And install windows XP.

I don't think it should be much of a problem :)
will you guide me through the process please?

oh, and about the drivers issue you mentioned having on Vista..it's true..even installing the graphics card's drivers is a nightmare...

So again, I will be grateful for your help :)

Answer
Boot from a windows XP CD

You need to install the RAID devices before installation begins, so make sure you have the RAID drivers.  Press F6 when you are prompted.

Reformat during setup.  Be sure to do a full format instead of a quick format.

Continue with installation

Good Luck

-Mike
