Windows XP - Two Outlook Express Questions

Question
Hi.

I use Outlook Express 6 and XP.

1. A friend instructed Outlook Express to have the RoadRunner server keep copies of the emails I receive. I've since found this to be a bother and want to turn it off. But I can't find the Outlook Express box that my friend clicked to have copies kept online (so that I can unclick it).

[2] I read my late-arriving office email from my home every night (by going to the RoadRunner server).

But occasionally I forget to close my office Outlook Experss, so when I get home I find that RoadRunner has downloaded the emails to my office. (That's why I started to keep copies online, but it's not worth it.)

Is there any way to have Windows automatically close Outlook Express at 6:00pm every night that I have not done so and to do nothing if I have remembered to close Outlook Express?

Many thanks,

Steve

Answer
Hello Steve,

You are going to want to check your account settings within outlook express. Click on TOOLS/ACCOUNTS and then click on PROPERTIES to your account. Clicking on ADVANCED server settings you will probably see the check box selected for 'keep a copy on the server'
This is actually a good thing, so long as you also use the two rules below that (delete when in deleted items folder) as well as (remove after X days (I set this to 2 or 3 as this is typically enough time (in the case of a long weekend) where you have left a copy on the server. Note if you get a lot of email this may end up having your mailbox become full if you do leave a copy on the server for too long.
In your case you are asking to turn this off so by de-selecting the first option to 'leave a copy on the server' will not have it leaving a copy. The problem with this is basically what you are then saying what is happening when you leave your program running on your home computer, that is because it has downloaded it all to that computer and there is not a copy left on the server.  You can have it both ways but you are obviously going to have to remember to close the program if you are not going to leave a copy on the server.

Depending on your email provider, you may be able to take advantage of IMAP server which would actually sync the mail and folders on whatever computer you connect to. By using this method you do not need to use the 'leave a copy on the server' option.  YOu will have to check with your internet provider/email provider if they offer IMAP service. If they do, they will also provide you with information on how to set this up.

As for some sort of timer to close the program because you forgot... you may want to visit TUCOWS (www.tucows.com) and see if there is such a utility as I am not aware off hand. You can also find many more TIPS and SOFTWARE/SUPPORT through my website at http://tpsconsulting.com. I suggest you install all the programs from the pink section on the software/support page as they will help with the cleaning/optimizing and ongoing maintenance from the spyware/malware issues that cause so many problems and slowdowns.

Hope this helps,

Sincerely

Mike Dacre
