Windows XP - Sound problem with windows

Expert: Saad Shawwa - 10/5/2008

Question
Hello. I am having problems getting my sound to work.  It has worked for years on my computer perfectly, but in the last few days i cannot get sound to work with media player, utube, mp3s etc.  The catch is, when i reboot my computer the windows sound effects are working fine and come across lound and clear on my speakers.  So i'm pretty sure everything is still plugged in and functional. Besides windows sound effects, though, i can't get sound from any other programs or files. Please help! Device manager says my sound drivers are fine. When i try to play an mp3 with windows media player i get an error that says "cannot play your file because there is an error with your sound device. THere might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly".  As far as i know i haven't changed anything and sound was working as recently as last week.  Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Hello lan how are you doing

try this first
Open the Media Player
At the top, Click on "Tools"
Select "Options"
Click on the "Devices" tab
In the list of devices, double-click on "Speakers"
Under 'audio device to use' it probably lists your sound card using the selector button on the right side of the window, change this
setting to: "Default Directsound Device" (Note that "Directsound" will show as one word).

exit then press OK/ Apply , close windows media player , try to run mp3 file or wav or any song

tell me how it goes
take care and good luck.
