About Ray Barham Expertise I can answer just about any question that there is when it comes to anything windows related. I have been a computer technician for about 7 years now and I have the knowledge and experience to provide very detailed answers to situations that may be common, everyday problems or issues that the tech at the local best buy couldn't answer.
Experience I have been in the computer industry for 7 years. In my years in this field, I've served as a computer technician, a consultant, a network engineer, a salesman and both inside and outside technical work.
Organizations I am the owner / operator of Xtreme PC, located in Elkhart, IN. We specialize in computer repair for a fraction of the cost. We have developed a way to get a computer fixed and shipped back to the customer for less that the local shop in their city would be able to do it for. And we have a 4 business day return policy.
Education/Credentials I completed all the course to become a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, but I stopped after the first test because I found that I wouldn't make any more money with all 7 test completed as I was making with one
Past/Present Clients I used to be an expert here. I just got so busy that I couldn't keep up with the amount of questions
Expert: Ray Barham Date: 7/18/2008 Subject: Explorer Crashes Repeatedly With No Warning
Question Hi Ray,
Over this past weekend a trojan called 'AntiMalware Guard' infected my home computer. I have ran a full system scan using McAfee several times and it appears that the trojan has been eliminated from the PC (it had affected the 2 accounts on my computer).
But now it's been eliminated I have a new problem: within 10 seconds of logging on to any of the PC's accounts, explorer.exe crashes without warning...then restarts...then crashes and so on. When it crashes everything on my desktop disappears. I have even tried starting up in safe mode and explorer is still acting up in the same manner. I really have no idea what's going on. I've tried sfc/ scannow, chkdsk and so on but there is still no improvement.
I have asked another expert (Lenny) for possible solutions but neither worked for me. Here are his suggestions:
OPTION 1(SYSTEM RESTORE)-MICROSOFT RECOMMENDED
1-Click on CTRL-ALT-DEL to ignite the "Task Manager"
2-Click on "File" then "New Task(Run)"
3-Type %SystemRoot%System32RestoreRstrui.exe
4-On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next .
5-On the Select a Restore Point page, click the system checkpoint.
6-On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration and then restarts the computer.
7-Log on to the computer. When the System Restore confirmation page appears, click OK.
OPTION 2(EXPLORE.EXE reset)
-Start the computer and then press "CTRL-ALT-DEL" to ignite the "Task Manager".
-Click on "File" then "New Task(Run)"
-Type iexplore.exe
-Click OK
-Copy and Paste this on the address bar of Internet Explorer http://pcbutts1.com/downloads/tools/tools.htm
-Press Enter on the keyboard
-When site is open please scroll down and locate "Windows Explorer shell fix"
-Click on "Download" button
-Click "Open" on the pop-up window.
-Select the necessary program(should be WINZIP or WINRAR) on your computer to open/run the file.
-Follow prompts to accomplish opening and running the program.
-The program will reset "Explorer.exe" to default.
-Restart the computer and see if the problem is gone.

Please help me fix the problem.
Thanks for your time,
Keaton

INFO:
I'm on a Dell Dimension 3000 with Windows XP Home Edition. I've forgotten how to pull up or my system's information so if you let me know how to do that I'll be able to provide you with more details.
Thanks again :)
Answer Keaton,
I have some not so good news. Sometimes, virus just don't get removed. They lay dormant in one folder and before you can get the thing fully delete in that place, it has replicated itself somewhere else.
The only full proof solution I can give is a format / reinstall.
However, I do suggest pluging your hard drive into a different computer and running a virus scan from the other computer. That way no files are in use that the virus program can't delete.
