Expert: Mike Dacre Date: 7/12/2008 Subject: Will a HDD with OS XP (reinstalled from other computer) work in similar motherboard ?
Question I took out my HDD from a system which has an ASUS K8S-MX motherboard.
The system was getting slow and hanging. So I was wondering if I can format and reinstall XP with the help of another computer which has the similar series motherboard (K8S-MX) but, not exactly the same as the one I removed it from.
The processors are the same too i.e. AMD Athlon 64, 2800+.
Windows XP Service Pack 2.
BIOS may be different.
Plz help ...
Thanks
Answer Hello Shekar,
Actually what I would suggest doing first is attempting a windows repair. You can learn how to do this by visiting my website at http://tpsconsulting.com and then clicking on the TIPS link. The tip you should read is the VARIOUS WINDOWS XP TWEAKS tip as this will explain how to perform a windows repair which basically reinstalls windows overtop of the old system files, without the need to reinstall all of your other programs. I will use this method first, and hope that this repairs most of the problems due to the spyware/malware issues that have corrupted and/or replaced certain system files. I also suggest reading the OPTIMIZING tip as this will then point you to the SOFTWARE/SUPPORT page where I suggest installing all the programs from the PINK section as they will help with the cleaning/removal and ongoing maintenance from the spyware/malware issues that cause the problems you are having.
To answer your actual question.. yes you could do this but you would have to start in safe mode and remove all the device drivers so that windows could then redetect and install the correct ones and in most cases, you may be asked to re-register as enough hardware changes had been made. In which case you would have to use the license code that is on the box you are working with, not the one from which you had moved the hard drive from. I find this method to only work about 30 percent of the time, and for the time it takes, the method I recommend (the repair method) is much more effective.
