About Ray Barham
Expertise
I can answer just about any question that there is when it comes to anything windows related. I have been a computer technician for about 7 years now and I have the knowledge and experience to provide very detailed answers to situations that may be common, everyday problems or issues that the tech at the local best buy couldn't answer.

Experience
I have been in the computer industry for 7 years. In my years in this field, I've served as a computer technician, a consultant, a network engineer, a salesman and both inside and outside technical work.

Organizations
I am the owner / operator of Xtreme PC, located in Elkhart, IN. We specialize in computer repair for a fraction of the cost. We have developed a way to get a computer fixed and shipped back to the customer for less that the local shop in their city would be able to do it for. And we have a 4 business day return policy.

Education/Credentials
I completed all the course to become a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, but I stopped after the first test because I found that I wouldn't make any more money with all 7 test completed as I was making with one

Past/Present Clients
I used to be an expert here. I just got so busy that I couldn't keep up with the amount of questions

Windows XP - USB problems

Expert: Ray Barham - 7/13/2008

Question
Hello Ray,

I have a USB issue that is driving me nuts.  I can't seem to find any information on my exact problem.  Please excuse the lengthiness but here goes.

When I insert any USB flash drive in either of the front ports, the light in the flash drive comes on for a few seconds then goes out and I get the "USB device not recognized..." message.  I have looked at the Device Manager and there are no conflicts and the flash drive shows up as "Unknown device".  I have tried numerous things and I can tell you this much.
1) I have an external USB hard drive plugged into one of the USB ports on the back.
2) If I plug the flash drive into one of the back ports it works OK.  If I plug it into the front, it does not work.  3) If I plug the flash drive into the front and then boot up the computer, the flash drive works OK but then the external hard drive shows up as "Unknown Device" in Device Manager.
4) If I unplug the flash drive, reboot the computer, the external hard drive is OK again but now if I plug the flash drive in the front, it will not work.

I would appreciate any suggestions you might have concerning this problem because I don't know where to turn to anymore.  I've looked at a gazillion web pages and Microsoft Support and can't find any info on my problem.  Thanks much for your help.

Steve

Answer
Steve,

I think I have a solution.  I think it's corrupted USB drivers.  Uninstall all of the usb ports.  Then go to the website of the manufacturer of your motherboard.  You know, like, Intel, Asus, Biostar, Gigabyte, ect and download the usb drivers for your specific motherboard.  Sometimes windows update will install a wrong driver...because it's windows.
