Subject: Upgrade 98FE to XP

Question
I currently have running a Windows 98 First Edition and I have the Xp CD that I can use to upgrade the OS. The processor is a 550MHz Socket 7. As far as I know, Xp requires 300MHz to even run. Windows 98 takes only 66MHz to run and it is still laggy and full of stalls, so knowing it is laggy with only 66MHz, I could not even imagine how bad Xp would be with the same processor. I have searched online for a faster processor for the Socket 7, but 550MHz was the fastest I found. What do I do?

Answer
Hello Jeffery ,

as you mentioned windows xp can operate on a 550MHZ CPU, also it need higher memory 256MB is good but higher is better , but it will be slow and kinda boring too. if your computer is too old you wont find old stock with larger cpu speeds , your max cpu speed that can be attached could be 633mhz which is not a big deference to the 550mhz.

you have too many choices here
1.buying a new computer.
2.buying a new motherboard with new CPU + RAM ( old rams wont work on newer motherboards)
3.upgrading your windows98 to xp with the existing hardware youhave and trying it out.

if you need more help feel free to contact me back anytime
take care and good luck.
