Expertise
I can pretty much answer any question related to PC`s. My ratings speak for themselves. All I ask is that you ask the question in English.....I do not understand gibberish and I will ask you to resend the question if I cannot understand it. I will do the best I can answering your questions. I've been working with computers for well over 20 years.

Windows XP - Windows XP history file

Question
QUESTION: I have been running windows xp home with IE 7 for over 2 and 1/2 years now without any problems. However within the past week IE7 has not been "consistently" saving my history. What I mean by that is sometimes when I shut off the computer and then reboot my history for that particular day remains, sometimes it does not. A week ago I lost ALL my history that was from back to three weeks ago. Now if I am lucky sometimes the history will remain for one day at most. In fact some days when I leave the computer unattended and return, I find the computer has rebooted itself and my history for the present day which was there prior to the reboot is now gone!!!

My ISP in Canada is Sympatico MSN. I subscribe to their PREMIUM service which includes anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection. I continually receive automatic updates and I have been running a scan of anti-virus and spyware three to four times a week.

When I first noticed the missing history I assumed, after much internet research, that it was due to a problem with IE7 so I removed IE7 and reverted back to IE6. I still had the same problems. I then tried downloading IE7, paying particular attention to ALL the instructions given for IE7 problems. I even ran their free scan service which found nothing significant. I thought I had the problem licked because when I turned off the computer and rebooted a few times the history for that day remained in memory - I double checked by  using the explore feature under start. I sailed along happily for the rest of the day and all sites I visited were added to the history list - both in IE7 and in my history file under "local settings".

However the next morning after I rebooted the history was missing both on IE7 and in the history file under local settings. I also noticed that when I went to disk cleanup that their were NO files there to clean up. I did not run a disk cleanup!!  So now things were really getting complicated. I tried using the computer some more that day and checked from time to time the number of files in "disk cleanup". I began to notice that each time my history would disappear that the temporary internet files in disk cleanup would disappear as well even though I had not run a disk cleanup. So I thought I would be smart and took the check mark off the TIF in disk cleanup, thinking that it would prevent these files from being deleted if disk cleanup started on it's own. It did not take long to find out that disk clean up removed the TIF on it's own even though there was no check mark in the box. So it seems as though my deleted history may linked to a spontaneous running of disk cleanup.

Today I am running with the MSN premium provided browser to see if the history will remain in that browser but I kind of doubt it since I think it uses the same history file under local settings as does IE6 and IE7.

Sure hope you can help me with this problem. Sorry for the long spiel.

ANSWER: You should not be using IE in the first place.  Use Firefox.  IE is garbage.

QUESTION: Michael:

Thank you for your very concise answer. However as I mentioned in my second last para I ran the MSN premium browser yesterday. The same thing happened with it. It kept my history for most of the day but when I closed it and reopened it ALL of my history was deleted and ALL of the files were "cleaned up" on "disk cleanup" even though I did not run  it and had only the recycle bin box checked. Webclient and Publisher temp files always remains at 32K regardless.

I have heard others talk about Firefox. Is that a free browser?

Also do you think running ccleaner, Registry Mechanic,Spybot or the likes could solve the problem because to me it appears as though the problem is not with the browser.

Thanks in advance for help you may be able to give.

Answer
First thing you have to realize, Microsoft browsers suck.....

IE is Microsoft

MSN stands for MicroSoft Network

Firefox is by Mozilla and is free

If it still happens with that, then we will have to look into it more.

Don't run any other cleaning program until you try Firefox first.

Let me know
