Question
QUESTION: Lorry:
I was experimenting with changing the start page for IE.
Now I continually receive an anoying message at start up and shut down of XP.
Is it possible to remove the message from occurring. The message is as follows:
“A change has been detected in your Internet Explorer Styart Page:
The new page is:
http://www.attbusiness.net/

Please click Yes if this is OK;
Click No and the start page will restore to:
http://www.attbusiness.net “

Hope you can help as usual.

ANSWER: Hi Nicholas,

Try downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41 from:

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Once installed, check for updates, then run a scan.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Lorry:
Malwarebytes did an OK scan.
It seems to me that there is a bona fide program running that checks for the condition that I am encountering.
I suspect that it is a piece of software in in XP that checks for the codition.

ANSWER: Hi Nicholas,

Usually this happens when spyware takes over, that is why I suggested downloading Malwarebytes. You could download WinPatrol 17.0.2010 from:

http://download.cnet.com/WinPatrol/3000-8022_4-10129149.html

By using the above program, you should be able to stop that from showing on startup.

Another thing you could do would be to open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, under the Advanced tab click Reset under Reset Internet Explorer's settings, Apply, then OK.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Lorry:
Many thanks for the follow up. But neither of the latest suggestions have cured the problem. This is a weird one. I suspect that others may have encountered the problem. I will check the MS site to determine if MS has a fix. If I get it fixed, I will let you know. Thanks for hanging in.

Answer
Hi Nicholas,

Don't know of anything else to suggest at this time. I really don't think I virus would cause this but it wouldn't hurt to run the free scan from Symantec. Using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp

Click "Continue to Symantec Security Check", in the next window click No when asked if you want to close this window, that will bring you to a window where you should click Virus Detection.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

I am interested in knowing what to do to stop the error, so if and when you find out, please let me know? Thanks!

Have a good evening!
Lorry
