Windows XP - UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Question Hi Lorry
When I rebooted the I had the below error message.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
I read http://www.ehow.com/how_4937440_fix-unmountablebootvolume-blue-screen-death.html about how to fix it. However, I do not think I have the Windows XP professional disc that a technician used to install it. I may be able to find a Win XP Home disc. Could that be all right to try?
Or would it be safer to get a technician to fix this? I am not savvy with fixing computers and have never installed Windows on a machine.
Do you know what may have caused this problems in the first place?
Your help is appreciated
Regards Richard.
Answer Hi Richard,
The cause for this error could be any one of the following:
1.The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted.
2.You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable.
3.The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.
Can you start Windows in Safe Mode by tapping the "F8" key when Windows first starts until you get a window with various ways to start Windows, choose Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode, double click My Computer, right click the Local Drive C, click the Tools tab, Check Now under Error Checking, in the next window check both "Automatically fix file system errors" and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors", click Start. In the next window click Yes to restart Windows. Close those windows and restart Windows, when Windows restarts the scan should run.
If that doesn't help, I would suggest taking the computer to the local repair shop, have them backup anything of importance - including your Address Book and reinstall Windows for you.
Hope this helps!
Lorry
