Windows XP - iTunes/XP Problem

Expert: Tom Guertin - 6/28/2009

Question
I really hope you can help me with this problem. I'm not sure what I did but for some reason my itunes just refused to work, it keeps coming up with the message "the folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder.

I think the problem is that for some reason my computer keeps changing the file to read only, Ive tried changing it back but it just keeps returning. No matter how many levels I go up,changing the entire drive that its contained in, it just keeps changing back to read only.
Id be really grateful for any help.

Answer
Emma,

You need administrative privaledges to be able to install and remove software.  Please verify you have administrative privaledges.

Checking for Administrative Rights

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
Click the + to the left of “Local Users and Groups”
Click Groups
Double Click Administrators in the right window
Does your login exist

If not:
Click the Add… Button
Type the User
Click the “Check Names” Button
Click the “OK” Button

If you have administrative rights, try logging in as local administrator.  Maybe your profile is corrupted.  If you don't know your local administrator password, reset it:

Resetting Local Administrator Password

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
Click the + to the left of “Local Users and Groups”
Click Users
Right Click Administrator in the right window, pull down and click on “Set Password…”
Change the Password to something you will remember

If everything works as local administrator and your account has administrative rights, your profile may be corrupted.  We can rename your profile folder and login again creating a new profile.  You need to do this as local administrator:

Renaming your Profile

Open  “My Computer”
Double Click the C: drive
Double Click “Documents and Settings”
All the Folders here are Profiles
Administrator, All Users, and Default User are default profiles
Right click your profile folder, drag down and click rename.
Add .old to your profile folder.  (Making Emma, Emman.old)

Logout and login as yourself which will create a new profile (and folder).  If everything is good with your new profile, copy your data from the old profile:

Copying your Profile
Click Start -> My Computer
Double Click C:
Double Click Documents and Settings
Double Click your profile folder, the one identical to your login
Copy Desktop, Favorites, and My Documents to the new folder

I hope this helps!  Let me know...

Tom
