Question
When I stated out I was using mostly 98. I happenes to like. Then I bought a new computer w/ Vista on it.
Back in the old days of 98 one could go toa window and decided by using a check mark which programs would run on boot up and which once wouldn't. For instance, I never use Window Office, so why should i have it running in the background taking up space and resources.
Is there a similar window in Vista that I can stop programs from running when I boot up when I don't need them.
Thanks for taking a Vista question even tho you are a Windows guy. Hope you cal help.
Sincecelry,
Kirby Lemesh

Answer
Kirby,

There are many ways to stop services from automatically starting.

1) Cleanout (delete) the short cuts in your startup folders:
  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
  C:\Documents and Settings\Kirby\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
(In the above folder, Substitute your login for Kirby)

2) Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Right click the service, drag down and click Properties, and set Startup type: to Manual

3) MSCONFIG still exists in Vista.  Start -> Run and type 'msconfig' <enter>
Here you can adjust startup programs under the Startup TAB and services in the Service TAB.

You should keep track of what you set to manual or stop so if somethings not working afterwards you can figure out which process stopped it.

I hope this helps!  Let me know...

Tom

Kirby,  Item 2 and 3 do work on Vista.  I checked them this morning.
