Windows XP - blocking websites

Expert: Tom Guertin - 7/2/2009

Question
I want to block our home pc from accessing certain websites but dont want my family to know I am blocking them.  My wife and daughter will be furious but I have had viruses on our computer from there websites they visit.  I know of content advisor thru IE and that will be obvious I am blocking it.  How about some way to redirect the site to a different one such as if they type in myspace and I have it redirected to a different website?  We have one xp computer and one vista.  Also thought about blocking thru the router but would that be obvious too?

Answer
James,

I suggest marking these sites as restricted which forces strict security on them.  They are still allowed access to the sites, but all communications are watched closely for unwanted behavior.

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options
Click the Security TAB
Click the Restricted Sites icon
Click the Sites Button
Here add the website like myspace.com and click the Add Button
Add all the sites that you are worried about

I don't think they will know of this area.

Do they have their own logins?  If so, you can remove their administrative rights and the will not be able to install software or make changes without getting you involved.

Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
Click the + to the left of 'Local Users and Groups'
Click Groups
Double click Administrators on the top of the right window
Remove there access

If they all use the same login, you can create separate logins for each of them.

Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
Click the + to the left of 'Local Users and Groups'
Click Users
Click Action -> New User...
Fill out the form:
Pick something simple like User Name: Lisa, Full Name: Lisa
We usually select “Password never expires”
You must de-select “User must change password at next logon”
Click the Create button

I hope this helps!  Let me know...

Tom
