About John Redds Expertise I can help with general XP OS troubleshooting and workarounds. Not just the operating system, but basic programs(such as IE, WMP, MSNMSGER and the like) as well. If you looking for ways and tweaks to improve user-friendliness and increase the comfort of your experience, I'm the one you're looking for. Having a slight run-in with viruses, glitches, irritating and annoying system messages that keep asking you to update or turn on your firewall? Ask me. Games not running? Desktop theme not displaying? Wondering where 'that file your friend sent you' is? Brat of a sister moved stuff around system folders? Looking for simple-to-use programs to do, fix or find something? Yours Truly is here. I answer best in English. I can also answer in Bahasa Malaysia.
I may not be an 'expert' expert in the area, but when you're someone who computers keep screwing up for no particular reason when you're nearby, you need to know how to get around them. NOTE: SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU ARE RUNNING UNDER THE WINXP OS DOES NOT MEAN YOUR QUESTION IS XP OS-RELATED. PLEASE DO NOT BE DISAPPOINTED IF YOU DO NOT GET A SATISFACTORY ANSWER WHEN ASKING ABOUT SOMETHING LIKE HARDWARE DRIVERS =)
I also specialize in searching for content/downloadable files in the internet as well. If you're ABSOLUTELY sure you can't find 'This MP3' or 'That program', try your luck with me. I come with high recommendations from my circle.
Question Hi John,
My task manager has been disabled when I was downloading some files from the Internet. I've tried numerous ways to enable it again such as gpedit.msc and others but it didn't work.
Then I got a tip from a friend to try using HijackThis and post the log to an expert. So, if you have the time, could you look at my log and see what is the problem with my computer, please? I hope you'd reply ASAP as this is a home computer and I need it for projects.
I'm running on Windows XP Professional Edition. Here is the log :

Answer Ah, I'm not some sort of programmer nor an actual internationally-qualified expert, so there is no need to send logs and error logs as such to me. I don't even understand them =) By 'task manager is disabled', do you mean the option is greyed-out?
If you're on an admin account, and even tried gpedit.msc to no avail, there's a high possibility it might be due to an infection. Run a virus scan and clean the system, if possible.
If gpedit.msc doesn't work, why not try doing it manually? Run regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > System . There should be a value named DisableTaskMgr. Delete it. That should do the trick. Let me know if it works. Regardless, you should get rid of any and all viruses as soon as you can.
