Windows XP - error when closing internet explorer

Expert: Jonathan D Roach - 2/16/2007

Question
I keep getting an error when closing Internet Explorer.. I'm running XP with IE 7.0  the pop up says
iexplore.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x6c371371351" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".  Click OK to terminate the program.
I thought it might have something to do with Data Execution Prevention DEP , accessing memory location 0x04,... but I tried changing the setting for that and it still gives this error...   Do you know what would cause iexplore.exe to error on a read of memory location 0x04 .. it is always the same memory location...  thanks..

Answer
Mark,

This is a RAM (Memory) issue, try increasing the size of your windows page file (Virtual Memory).

It is possible that you have a memory stick/module that is faulty, if you have more than one stick of ram in your machine you can try powering down and removing the ram sticks and try running each one individually.

You can also try running memtest to see if your ram is faulty: http://www.memtest86.com/

As well you can also try re-installing/repairing IE to see if that cures the problem.

Hope this helps.
